My latest pregnancy craving has been trail mix! The only time I ever crave lollies is whilst pregnant so this is an excellent, more nourishing substitute.
I've included almonds, cashews and pumpkin seeds in this recipe mainly for their calcium, zinc and magnesium content, but feel free to add your favourites or those that you have in the house.
Ingredients:
3/4 cup almonds, roughly chopped
1/2 cashews, roughly chopped
1/2 cup pumpkin seed (aka pepitas)
1/2 cup 85% dark chocolate
1/2 cup naturally dried raisins or sultanas
1/2 cup dried strawberries
1/4 cup dried kiwi fruit (ripped into smaller pieces)
Method:
Pour all ingredients into a storage container.
Close the lid and shake until combined.
Store until ready to consume.
Health Tip:
When purchasing dried fruit, ensure that the only ingredient it contains is the fruit.
Common additives/ preservatives in dried fruit contain sulphites, refined oils like canola oil and sugar. These can lead to bloating, pain, diarrhoea, constipation and a disrupted gut microbiome.
Also be aware of portion sizing, as dried fruit contains the same amount of sugar and carbohydrates as a full piece of fruit, without the water content. Hence it's very easy to over consume them and feel unwell.
Happy Day!
